The Waterfront | Official Trailer | Netflix
"I see the name Buckley everywhere as I drive up here." The opening lines in the trailer for The Waterfront introduce us to the Buckley family and their hometown of Havenport, North Carolina, where they rule supreme – for the time being. These shots are intercut with images of a busy fishing dock, expansive beach mansions and a rocky coastline.
The new dramatic series, which is based on the fictional Buckley family and their collapsing fishing business, was created by Kevin Williamson, the same man behind Dawson's Creek and Scream. The main cast includes Holt McCallany (The Iron Claw, Mindhunter) as patriarch Harlan Buckley, who is recuperating from two heart attacks; Maria Bello (BEEF, A History of Violence) as his stern and well-groomed wife Belle; Melissa Benoist (The Girls on the Bus, Supergirl) as their daughter Bree, a recovering addict who has lost custody of her son Diller (Brady Hepner); and Jake Weary (Animal Kingdom, Trigger Warning) as Harlan and Belle's son Cane, who is keen to live up to the Buckley moniker.
The Waterfront, which is set against the background of coastal North Carolina, examines family dynamics and the extent people will go to in order to preserve their heritage. Creator Williamson tells Tudum, "This is the first time we've really seen a story about the commercial fisherman told in any kind of dramatic way in a family drama."
The family's financial difficulties are immediately obvious in the video, as they must find $2 million in less than three months. Harlan is willing to smuggle $10 million worth of cocaine and opiates through the family fishing company in an effort to keep their heads above water. However, the Buckleys might be in trouble because of the DEA's presence and a deadly drug kingpin named Topher Grace who wants to make his mark.
