The Smashing Machine | Official Trailer HD | A24
The first trailer for the fact-based sports drama The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, aims for awards glory.
In the movie based on the same-titled documentary from 2002, the wrestler-turned-actor portrays MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Throughout his career, Kerr received numerous honours and trophies, but he also battled substance problems.
His connection with Emily Blunt, who played his ex-girlfriend at the time, is also explored in the movie. The two have previously starred in Jungle Cruise, a Disney adventure.
The writer-director Benny Safdie is the one behind the camera for the first time. He and his brother won praise for the crime dramas Uncut Gems and Good Times.
In 2024, Johnson told Variety, "Benny wants to create and keeps pushing the envelope when it comes to stories that are raw and real, characters that are authentic and at times uncomfortable and arresting." "At this stage of my career, I want to challenge myself in ways that I haven't done before. At this stage of my career, I want to create meaningful films, examine humanity, and examine suffering.
Safdie described it as a "very cool, aesthetically exciting, visual director" while Blunt described it as "an incredibly immersive, very intense, very emotional experience" in December of last year.
Johnson, who starred in the Christmas action comedy Red One last year, will next be seen in the live-action Moana remake.
Additionally, he was just cast in Blunt, Martin Scorsese's murder thriller set in Hawaii that also stars Leonardo DiCaprio. Johnson describes it as "an unbelievable, inspiring, and eye-opening experience" and will co-author a true crime book about the same topic.
